What is MM?

A millimeter, also abbreviated as (mm) is a small unit of measurement in the metric system. The metric system is the standard of measurement for science, technology, engineering and Mathematics and is considered synonymous with the International System of Units (SI). ‘Meter’ is a Greek word which means to measure. Millimeters are used in measuring very small lengths and distances that are visible to scale. It is also the size of wire used in a standard paper clip when described in terms of real-world comparisons.

The standard ruler can also be used to measure various objects in millimeters. 10 millimeters is equivalent to 1 centimeter and the ruler will have 10 tiny millimeter lines in between every centimeter line to designate the millimeter. The standard ruler can measure up to 300 mm which means that 30 centimeters is equivalent to 300 millimeters.

One inch is equal to 25.4 millimeters and is used to in measuring small distances in machining or engineering. It is important to remember a number of details when converting millimeters to inches. A single millimeter is approximately 1/25th of an inch and you can find 3 mm in a 1/8 inch. You can convert a single yard into 914.4 millimeters and 304.8 millimeters make up a single foot. The metric system is usually based upon decimals and there are 1000 mm in one meter.

It is important to understand the basic conversions of millimeters into other units of measurements in the metric system. You can always use the conversion calculator to convert larger units to get the most accurate conversion. Most of these calculators are programmed with all the possible formulas for conversion. Sometimes it becomes difficult to convert larger units of measurements into millimeters. The programmed online calculators are useful in executing the conversions with a single click.
